In a country, institutions provide services to citizens. Citizens rush to institutions if they have a need in their offices. Sometimes we see a large pile of files that are not processed. What is surprising is that there is a case where they can demand the amount for processing the file and this is normal, the requester of the service pays this amount. An appointment is made to see the file if he returns and finds the file has not yet been processed. They give him the other appointment if he returns, he finds the same case and it continues in the same case. Surprisingly, the one who comes after is served provided that he gives corruption connoted in another language: “SODA, AMAZI Y’IKARAMU,…..”
What you need to do in order to have the service
When you need a service in the institutions or if you need to get any activity in the government you are asked to give them corruption. Corruption, monopoly and government intervention have always been issues of concern hindering free market system in Burundi and became the obstacles for development of the country because it privates everyone’s rights. They have limited invention, innovation, and investment in the market system.Acts of corruption are present at all levels of political, social and economic life and these practices become the rule, are tolerated, trivialized, and can distort the democratic process. These acts present harmful inconveniences to the lives of all humans and haunt the development of the country. Corruption hinders the very basis of republican institutions, democratic values, justice and thus compromises the development of a rule of law and undermines the quality of governance: it constitutes a permanent threat to the authority of the State, the stability and security of public institutions.
What should be done?
We should deny this act of corruption but point out he whoever is attempting the evil action. Raise our voice because what they do against offering services is not beneficial to the country and the country is giving them salary. They should accept their salary and avoid corruption.
