Effects of corruption

Effects of corruption

Corruption, which is the perversion or misuse of a process or interaction with one or more people with the aim, for the corrupter, of obtaining particular advantages or prerogatives or, for the corrupted person, of obtaining compensation for compliance, can have a devastating effect on the availability, quality and accessibility of human rights-related goods and services. Furthermore, it undermines the functioning and legitimacy of institutions and processes, the rule of law and, ultimately, the State itself. This is the same case for African countries including Burundi.International human rights mechanisms, including the Human Rights Council, have paid increasing attention to the negative impact of corruption on the enjoyment of human rights and have made numerous recommendations to Member States in order to prevent and suppress corrupt practices.

Generally speaking, who is affected by corruption?

Corruption exists in all countries, whatever their economic or political system and their level of development, in the public and private sectors but in many cases, today, African countries are the most affected. It is a transnational phenomenon that requires international cooperation, particularly with regard to the recovery of the proceeds of corruption.

Corruption particularly affects disadvantaged individuals and groups. They are often more dependent on public goods and services from requester (citizens) and have limited means to call on other private services. They generally have more difficulty participating in the development and implementation of public policies and programs and do not have the necessary resources to defend themselves and seek redress. Those involved in efforts to investigate, expose, prosecute and adjudicate corruption are at greater risk of human rights violations and need to be effectively protected.

Are there strategies to fight corruption?

Anti-corruption efforts must respect human rights standards to avoid losing legitimacy and must be implemented by leaders who love their country and want development and human rights. Human rights standards, principles and mechanisms provide additional mechanisms to complement anti-corruption effort.

Burundian institutions are very corrupt at the level that you can't get a service without bribing them.At this time, you are losing you rights because you had rights to have this service and you pay for it many times. Then, there should be the fact of raising our voice. This is the first part of the oppressed. But The government should multiply the meetings about this issue.

Our leaders will destroy our country themselves but victims will remain citizens.Oppressed are those ordinary citizens(we will die ).But this kind of birth would not happen if we wake up! Change will happen,if we put our ideas together we will change things.

it is entirely conceivable that "a better and more sustainable future for all" often runs counter to the interests of a few and can be derailed through many forms of corruption. Under conditions of diminished State capacity, nations fail to eradicate poverty, address hunger, secure good health care and high quality education for their citizens, guarantee gender equality and other human rights, reduce inequality, and so on.
